Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub athlete Lizzie Bird has broken her own British record during the 3000m steeplechase Olympic final.

Lizzie registered a new record time of 09:19.68 to finish ninth in the Tokyo final, beating her previous record of 9:22.80 set in the Diamond League event in July 2021.

As a member of the Leeds Beckett University Talent Hub, Lizzie receives support from the Talent Hub’s coaching team, as well as academics from the Carnegie School of Sport. The Hub’s main aim is to provide its athletes a high-quality performance development environment.

Lizzie is one of four members from the Talent Hub to be included in Team GB’s squad, which includes 800m silver medalist and LBU student Keely Hodgkinson, 800m finalist and LBU graduate Alex Bell, and LBU graduate racewalker Tom Bosworth

York St John University awarded funding from XR Stories to support student internships and business collaboration.

Working with Safer Travel (Caroline’s Rainbow Foundation), a charity which offers advice and guidance for travelling safely abroad, York St John was able to offer internship opportunities to students through funding from research and development partnership XR Stories. Safer Travel was founded by Richard Stuttle, the brother of backpacker Caroline Stuttle who was tragically killed in Australia in 2002.

The funding from XR Stories secured paid internship opportunities for two Masters students. James Moore and Thomas White, both BA Games Design graduates from York St John, worked part-time on the project whilst studying for their Masters in Virtual and Augmented Reality. Over the course of 12 weeks, James and Thomas developed the software to use with a virtual reality headset, where users walk through a simulated airport scenario looking for dangers in their environment.

Last Saturday was our first ever visit (virtually) to Bali!

Our team had the opportunity to have a very interactive session with students of Gandhi Memorial Intercontinal School Bali (GMIS Bali). It is always great to see students enthusiastic about pursuing their further study to the UK 🇬🇧

We’d like to thank Sir Emil Macaraig of GMIS Bali for inviting us and for GMIS Bali students who stayed until the end the session and participated in our Jamboard session!
